Birch Breath #100: Audio-visual installation

2025

Video art, sound art

Data on CO2 levels were collected in a birch grove using a special sensor over the course of two months. This data captures the natural cycles of plant respiration, their interaction with the environment, and the people living nearby.
Using Max/MSP software, each change in CO2 levels is transformed into sound waves, creating a unique audio composition. The soundscapes mimic the breathing, growth, and interaction of the birch tree with its surroundings. The way the Russian soul, embodied in the birch tree, instills faith in the future, offering peace and tranquility, is manifested through the ringing of bells.
The data is also transformed into visual forms reminiscent of kaleidoscopic patterns. The patterns and shapes reflecting CO2 cycles evolve, creating endless combinations that echo the audio sequence.
